Fantastic Blueberry Milk Kefir Soda Smoothie

I’m always experimenting in the kitchen, especially with my homemade milk kefir. One day, I had the idea to make a creamy, fizzy blueberry milk kefir soda smoothie. It sounded tangy, creamy, lightly sweet, with that probiotic kick and a little fizz from a second ferment. I have made water kefir sodas before, so I was wondering if it would taste just as delightful.

It definitely did! It’s creamy, tangy, lightly sweet, and ends up with this soft natural fizz that makes it feel kind of like a yogurt soda smoothie. Not thick like a shake, not thin like juice, just somewhere in between with some natural fizz.

Blueberry Kefir Benefits for Gut Health

Homemade Milk kefir is naturally rich in probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that support a healthy gut microbiome. Since it’s fermented, it already contains a wide variety of live cultures that can help support digestion and overall gut balance when consumed regularly. Since this is also a second ferment, it has even more benefits like the organic acids increasing, lactose decreasing even more, more b vitamins, etc.

Blueberries also bring their own benefits to this drink. They’re high in antioxidants and plant compounds that support overall wellness and help fight oxidative stress in the body. They also pair really well with the tangy flavor of kefir, making the drink taste fresh and slightly sweet without needing much added sugar.

When combined, blueberry milk kefir turns into a simple, everyday gut-friendly drink you can enjoy as part of a balanced routine. It’s light, refreshing, and easy on digestion, especially when served chilled.

This is one of those recipes that fits into a morning routine, an afternoon refreshment, or even a light snack when you want something nourishing but not heavy.

What it tastes like

  • Creamy and smooth like drinkable yogurt
  • Bright blueberry flavor
  • Slight tang from the kefir
  • Light natural fizz after resting
  • Refreshing, not heavy at all

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup milk kefir (well fermented, nice and tangy)
  • 1/4 cup blueberries to make a puree (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 tsp maple syrup (optional, adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

How to make it

  1. Add milk kefir into a swing top bottle.
  2. Add blueberries and 1/4 cup of water to a sauce pan.
  3. Simmer for 5 minutes and mash the blueberries up really well.
  4. Add 2-4 Tbsp of puree to the kefir, straining is optional.
  5. Add the maple syrup and vanilla to the bottle and seal it half way.
  6. Allow it ferment for 3-5 hours on the counter.
  7. Seal it all the way and rerigerate for at least 30 minutes to chill it before serving.

Notes

  • Be careful, if you decide to seal it all the way on the counter, do not let it stay sealed for too long, especially in a warm environment. It can explode! Even in the fridge, “burp” it daily by opening it half way and letting the gasses release.
  • The longer it sits (within reason), the more tangy and fizzy it becomes
  • Always chill before drinking for the best flavor
  • If it ends up separating from sitting too long, you can pour it in a blender and blend it!! It will be freshly smooth. You will just have to seal it and stick it in the fridge overnight for the fizz to come back.
  • Because maple syrup and vanilla has anti bacterial properties, do not add too much or you could kill off the good bacteria and cause it to not fizz.

Serving idea

I like it cold straight from the fridge, sometimes with added fruit if I want it extra refreshing. It also gets slightly creamier after chilling, which I actually prefer.

instructions

Step 1: Make your blueberry puree

    • Heat ¼ cup blueberries in a small saucepan or microwave until soft.
    • Mash with a fork or spoon.
    • Let cool completely to room temperature before adding to kefir.

Important: Adding hot fruit can kill the kefir cultures and stop fermentation.

      Step 2: Mix your soda

      • Pour 1 1/2 cups strained milk kefir into your swing-top bottle.
      • Add 2–4 tbsp of the cooled blueberry puree.
      • Stir in 1 tsp maple syrup and ⅛–¼ tsp vanilla extract, if using.
      • Swirl gently to combine (avoid shaking too hard yet).

      Step 3: Ferment

      • Close the bottle loosely (just enough so it clicks, not fully tight).
      • Leave at room temperature for 3-5 hours
      • Carefully check carbonation at 3 hrs. Tighten the cap fully for extra fizz if desired. (be careful though, it will explode if you leave it sealed too long)

      Step 4: Chill & serve

      • Refrigerate to slow fermentation.
      • Shake gently before opening.
      • Pour over ice or enjoy straight from the bottle.
      • Optional: Add a few extra blueberries in the glass for garnish or texture.
