Homemade Ranch seasoning packet inside ziploc bag

Are you tired of grabbing the ranch packet at store? Maybe even forgot it for your specific recipe? Well don’t worry, this ranch seasoning mix is so easy to whip up and you probably already have these staples in your kitchen!

This homemade ranch seasoning is made with simple ingredients you can keep on hand and mix together in just a few minutes. Make a packet, store it in a zip lock bag, or make a big batch and store it in a mason jar, and you’ll have ranch seasoning ready whenever a recipe calls for a packet.

It’s especially handy for recipes like Mississippi pot roast, ranch chicken, ranch potatoes, dips, dressings, and casseroles.

Why Make Homemade Ranch Seasoning?

Making your own seasoning mixes at home has a few big advantages. You can control the ingredients, adjust the salt to your family’s taste, and make a large batch so you aren’t constantly buying little packets at the grocery store. When I go to make one packet of seasoning, it is a perfect time to prep other seasonings as well.

I also love being able to keep homemade pantry staples on hand. Once the bag or jar is mixed up, using it is just as easy as grabbing a packet from the pantry.

Ranch Seasoning ingredients

This makes roughly 1 packet’s worth:

  • 1½ tbsp dried parsley
  • 1 tsp dried dill
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp dried chives
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • 1 tbsp powdered buttermilk (optional, but gives it that classic ranch flavor)

Homemade Ranch Seasoning Ingredients

For one pint-size mason jar of ranch seasoning, you’ll need:

  • ¾ cup dried parsley
  • ¼ cup dried dill
  • ¼ cup garlic powder
  • ¼ cup onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons dried chives
  • 2 tablespoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • ½ cup powdered buttermilk

A Note About Powdered Buttermilk

Powdered buttermilk gives this seasoning that familiar tangy ranch flavor. If you don’t have it, you can leave it out, although the finished seasoning won’t have quite the same flavor as traditional ranch seasoning.

How to Make Ranch Seasoning

  1. Add all of the ingredients to a clean, dry pint-size mason jar, or a Ziploc bag.
  2. Secure tightly.
  3. Shake the jar, or bag until all of the ingredients are evenly distributed.
  4. Store the seasoning mix in a cool, dry pantry.

Because some of the ingredients can settle toward the bottom of the jar, give the jar a quick shake before measuring out each portion.

How Much Homemade Ranch Seasoning Equals One Packet?

Use 3 tablespoons of this homemade ranch seasoning anywhere a recipe calls for one ranch seasoning packet.

That’s what makes making a big batch so convenient—you can simply scoop out 3 tablespoons whenever you need a packet.

How to Use Homemade Ranch Seasoning

Mississippi Pot Roast

Use 3 tablespoons ranch seasoning in place of one store-bought ranch packet.

Combine it with your favorite Mississippi pot roast ingredients, including a chuck roast, au jus seasoning, butter, and pepperoncini peppers.

Homemade Ranch Dressing

To make a quick ranch dressing, combine:

  • 3 tablespoons homemade ranch seasoning
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ¼–½ cup milk

Whisk everything together and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving. Add more milk if you prefer a thinner dressing.

Or you could even try out my homemade kefir ranch! It tastes just like hidden valley, except it’s healthier for your gut!

Ranch Dip

For a thicker ranch dip, combine:

  • 3 tablespoons homemade ranch seasoning
  • 1 cup sour cream

Mix well and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.

You can also add a little mayonnaise or Greek yogurt if you want to change the consistency or flavor.

How to Store Homemade Ranch Seasoning

Keep your ranch seasoning in an airtight mason jar or another airtight container in a cool, dry pantry.

Because this recipe contains powdered buttermilk, use clean, completely dry measuring spoons whenever you scoop out the seasoning.

For the best flavor, use the mix within several months and replace your dried herbs and spices as they lose their freshness.

Easy Pantry Staple

Once you make homemade ranch seasoning, you’ll probably find yourself reaching for it more often than the packets. Having a jar ready in the pantry makes weeknight cooking a little easier while giving you more control over what goes into your family’s food.

So the next time a recipe calls for a ranch seasoning packet, skip the grocery store aisle and grab your mason jar instead!
